Nordic Fintech Highlights – October
October is wrapped up. The month’s biggest theme was efficiency: banks across the Nordics cut roles, and DNB tied its cuts directly to AI. Is the impact of AI finally starting to show? The other big themes were tighter capital rules and AI and automation in accounting, which has become the funding trend of the year.
We’ll take up the same questions at Nordic Banking Forum on 26 November at Clarion in Helsinki, with speakers from Berenberg, Danske Bank, DSGV, Luminor, Nordea and Revolut.
The week before is Slush week, with plenty going on in fintech, including the Mastercard Lighthouse Grand Finale on 18 November.
The full October review is below.
October updates
Banks reported their third quarter and paired the numbers with job cuts and tighter capital. Funding came in many small rounds, finance software groups kept buying, and Klarna added five more merchant and platform deals. In payments, Vipps MobilePay dropped MobilePay from its name across the Nordics, and Danmarks Nationalbank found that payments between Nordic countries are still expensive.
Funding
Eight rounds came to about €27M combined, so the typical round was small and early. Most of the new money went to software that automates finance work: accounting, invoice checks, credit risk, deal data and tools for financial advisors. Two older companies were funded by their own owners instead, with Trustly’s shareholders committing $40M and Neonomics raising €3.6M after cutting its costs nearly in half.
Banks
Q3 profits held up, but the signal was in capital and headcount. Nordea paused share buybacks pending ECB clarification, and SEB paused after the Swedish FSA raised its capital requirements, unusual for two banks that run regular buybacks. DNB is cutting about 400 roles as AI takes over routine work, and Danske Bank removed 106 roles in the same month it let business customers bank through AI agents, a first in the Nordics.
M&A
The deals were about buying capabilities and licences, not scale. Payward, the parent of Kraken, agreed to buy Saldo Bank, which gives a US crypto group a licensed Finnish bank. Nordic finance software groups kept buying small specialists across borders, adding fraud prevention, leasing software and accounting automation in France, Denmark, Germany and Iceland.
