Nordic Fintech Highlights – August 2026

Nordic Fintech Highlights – August

Autumn is here, and the calendar is back at full speed, globally and here in Helsinki.

Out in the world, we’re partnering on events from Copenhagen to Dubai. The full list is at the bottom of this email.

But the highlight of the season is our own, the Nordic Banking Forum on November 26th in Helsinki, where the Nordic banks actually meet. Early bird tickets are on sale until September 18th. Grab yours here.

We’re also launching a new insurance initiative. The day before the Forum, on November 25th, we’re getting insurance companies in one room for the first time. If you’d like to be part of it, just reply to this email.

The full August review is below. Read it.

August updates

August was a moderate month, with partnerships and launches the busiest categories. What stood out was how much of it looked outward. Most of the year’s deals have been Nordic companies working with each other, but this month the partnerships reached into the US, Canada and Africa, and both M&A deals crossed borders. Funding stayed quiet.

Partnerships

Tied with launches as the busiest category, and what changed was where the deals pointed. Most of the year’s partnerships have paired Nordic companies with each other. This month they reached players in the US, Canada and Africa instead. A partnership is still about access to rails and capability, not a launch, but the reach is new. The one exception at home was e-invoicing moving into the Finnish bank channel.

Launches

Launches matched partnerships for volume and held to the year’s pattern: tooling for other financial firms rather than consumer apps, led by compliance and AI. The clearest wrinkle was the spin-out, with operators leaving to build standalone infrastructure, a sign of a maturing ecosystem. On the consumer side the moves were incremental rather than structural.

Banks

The banks were about access and people. The line between challenger and incumbent kept thinning, with a challenger winning central-bank rail access once reserved for banks and another moving to license a local presence in Finland. Leadership seats kept turning over across the sector. The direction is unchanged: challengers reach for the incumbents’ privileges while incumbents rearrange for what comes next.
